11/4/2010 Today we had breakfast with our neighbors Mary-Anne and Doug. At 7:45 we were picked up to go to Santa Fe Island, one of Galapagos' islands. We had a two hour boat ride, and when we arrived there were dozens and dozens on sea lions. After that we went on a nice hike. We saw the opuntia, the tallest cactus in the world. This species of cactus is indigenous to the Galapagos Islands. When the cactus isn't tall it has thorns on it but when it's tall it loses its spines. This is because the cactus has to enemies, the land iguana and the turtles. They like to eat the prickly pear cactus and the thorns keep them out, but when the cactus is tall the thorns aren't needed because they can't climb. The iguanas are beige and wait for the prickly pear to fall to eat. Our tour guide found a prickly pear on the ground and fed it to the iguana. That looked awesome. We headed back to the boat and boated to the shore on the other side to play with the juvenile sea lions. I jumped in and went right back on the boat because the water was freezing. My parents had a lot of fun with them. The sea lions were playing tag and one was chewing on dad's flipper. Everyone came to the boat and changed and we all had an amazing lunch. They made a duck out of a cantelope and carrot. The carrot was good! And for dessert there was a cream puff with cream, chocolate cream, and chocolate sauce. Yummy! After lunch we had a two hour boat ride. During the boat ride there was a bird called a frigate which was flying at the same speed as the boat. We got back to the dock and saw millions of really bright red crabs. We got back to our room and had a great dinner. |
